ARTIST BIO & STATEMENT
Coffee Codes of the World is a byproduct of my fascination with country codes and my obsession with coffee.
A while back I designed a map of the world using the world’s Internet country codes. Country codes provide a unique framework for understanding the decentralized nature of the Internet – as well as understanding where the Internet is headed. For example, there are now more Internet users in China (.cn) than in the United States (.us).
The origin of coffee has long fascinated me, mostly because the countries of origin have also seemed so far away and exotic: Brazil, Kenya, Costa Rica. I was surprised during the course of researching this project to learn how just much coffee is produced in Vietnam. Vietnam is not really known for its coffee, but I suspect this will change in the years ahead.
I find that country codes provide a somewhat unique way of looking at the world. As an American, it’s sometimes challenging just to remember all 50 states, let alone all 200+ countries. So I wanted this project to get people thinking about the wider world and the role it plays in every cup of coffee they drink.
